V-02HD MK II: Create Additional Camera Shots with Preset Memories
Introduction
The V-02HD MK II has 2 HDMI inputs with scalers that allow you to zoom in to any area of an input source.
There are also 8 Preset Memories that let you instantly load different settings via the iPad Remote App.
By combining these two features, you can create additional camera shots, and this guide walks you through that.
This works great if you have wide shots set up on your cameras and you want to cut to closeups of the subjects in the shot.
This is similar to the ROI function on the V-600UHD. Note that HD sources may start to appear soft when zooming past 200%.
Creating Presets
First, connect the V-02HD MK II to the free iPad Remote App with a USB cable.
The V-02HD MK II has a USB-C port, and most iPads have a Lightning port.
One way to connect them is to use a USB-C to USB-A cable, and the Apple Lightning to USB adapter.
You can also use the standard menu system on the V-02HD MK II. Use the Video Input menu to adjust the zoom and position of the shots, and the Preset Memory menu to save the Presets.
This guide will focus on how to do this with the iPad Remote App.
Once connected to the app, you can begin to set up your shots.
On the main screen of the app, you will see the Preset Memory controls along the top.
Preset 1 should probably be your main wide shot. Press Save, followed by 1. It will ask you to confirm that you want to save it, so you do not accidentally overwrite a preset.
For the other shots, choose the input you want to use, and then press the Menu button in the corner.
If that input is selected as PGM, it will appear on the HDMI output.
From there, select Video Input on the left column, and then choose the input you want to adjust on the right side.
The controls we want to adjust are Zoom, Position H, and Position V.
Once you have created the shot you want, press Back in the top left corner to exit the menu. Then, save it to Preset 2.
It's helpful to tap Preset 1 to go back to your default zoom settings for both inputs, before you create and save the next Preset.
Using Presets
Once you have everything configured, you can tap the green arrow on the left side to access the Preset Memory screen.
Here, you can name both the Presets and the inputs and use the entire iPad screen to recall them.
Using MIDI Control
If you want to use the USB-C port for streaming or recording to a computer, note that the iPad requires a wired connection.
The Windows and Mac version of the control software will be released in late 2021, more information is on the V-02HD MK II product page.
Until this software is released, if you want to use the V-02HD MK II's USB-C port for streaming or recording, you can still control the Preset Memory recalls with MIDI control via the connected computer.
Once you have all your Preset Memories created and saved using the iPad app or standard menu, set up your software with MIDI control to send Program Change commands to the V-02HD MK II.
You can use any software or hardware capable of sending "Program Change" MIDI commands. Note that these are not the same as Note commands.
In this example, I used an Elgato Stream Deck hardware controller with a free MIDI plug-in installed.
To access Stream Deck plug-ins, open the Store within the Stream Deck desktop software, click on Plug-ins, and search for "MIDI".
You then need to create a Program Change button in the Stream Deck software. Drag Program Change from the list to an empty space.
Next, click on the button in the software and set it to:
Channel: 1, Button Type: Push, Program: 0, Midi Out Port: Roland V-02HD MK II
Then, right click on that button, and choose copy. You can paste it to 7 additional empty spaces in the Stream Deck software, and proceed to change the Title and Program number for each one.
Note that the Program number starts at 0, so Preset 1 is Program 0, Preset 2 is Program 1, all the way to Preset 8 is Program 7.
Once configured, you can press the buttons on the Stream Deck hardware to recall your Presets, just like you did in the iPad Remote App.
You can also name these buttons with the Stream Deck software.
Note that this naming is separate from the V-02HD MK II input and Preset naming.
Example of Different Settings
Here's an example of 5 different presets. Input 1 is a wide shot and Input 2 is another camera with a medium shot of the singer:
Input 1, Zoom: 100%, Position H: 0, Position V: 0
Input 1, Zoom: 200%, Position H: -100, Position V: 0
Input 1, Zoom: 200%, Position H: -1500, Position V: 200
Input 2, Zoom 100%, Position H: 0, Position V: 0
Input 2, Zoom 200%, Position H: 0, Position V: 0
