XS-84H: How to Update the System Program Firmware
This update guide applies to the following models:
- XS-82H
- XS-83H
- XS-84H
Going forward, this guide will only refer to the XS-84H, but the update process for the XS-82H and XS-83H is identical and uses the same firmware files.
Items Needed:
- XS-84H Hardware
- Windows or Mac Computer
- USB Flash Drive
Caution:
- Never apply this update data to any product other than the XS-84H. This update data may destroy the data or system program of other products.
- Never power-off your XS-84H while the update is in progress! If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the XS-84H won’t be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact a Roland service center near you if this occurs.
Procedure:
Before you begin, connect the USB Flash Drive to the XS-84H's USB MEMORY port on the bottom left corner of the front panel, and format it in the menu:
MENU > USB MEMORY > FORMAT > YES
- A 16 GB or smaller USB Flash Drive is recommended
- Larger drives may not finish formatting or start the update
- SD card adapters and hard drives are not compatible
- The XS-84H will format the USB Flash Drive as "FAT32"
- You can also format it using your computer, but using the XS-84H is recommended
Once finished, you will later connect it to your computer to transfer the update file.
Step 1
Download the System Program Firmware update file from the XS-84H Downloads Page.
Scroll to the bottom of the page, click the checkbox, and click on the orange button to download.
Note: The latest download is "xs8xh_sys315.zip", this image is for reference
It will appear in your downloads folder as xs8xh_sys315.zip.
The update files will be contained in the downloaded .ZIP archive file.
Extract the files from the .ZIP file, and leave the window open, you will copy the below files to the flash drive in the next step:
Note: The latest download is "xs8xh_sys315.zip", this image is for reference
Very Important:
Only use the .PRG file in the xs8xh_sys_v102 folder if your current firmware version is 1.00 or 1.01.
If you have firmware version 1.02 or later, use the .PRG file in the xs8xh_sys_v315 folder.
The name of the .PRG file in each subfolder is identical, so make sure to use the correct one.
Going forward, this guide will only refer to the .PRG file in the xs8xh_sys_v315 folder.
Do not open the SYS .PRG or NPU disc image files, they are not programs that run on your computer, and do not rename them. You will later upload them to the XS-84H in the following steps.
Step 2
Copy the update file XS-8xH.PRG and XS-8xNPU to the root directory of a USB flash drive.
Do not copy the xs8xh_sys_v315 or xs8xh_npu_1012 subfolders to the USB flash drive, only the .PRG and disc image file inside each respective sub-folder.
An image file in this case refers to a disc image (similar to a .zip file), and not a photo.
Note: The root directory is the top level or main folder you see when you connect a USB flash drive and click to open it.
Step 3
Power off the XS-84H.
Connect your USB flash drive to the XS-84H's USB MEMORY port on the bottom left corner of the front panel.
Press and continue to hold the [OUT 1 CH 5] + [OUT 1 CH 7] + [OUT 1 CH OFF] buttons, and turn on the power.
Continue to press and hold these buttons until the SWITCHING MODE button flashes.
Step 4
Press [ENTER] on the VALUE knob to begin the update.
When the message "Please Restart XS-84H" appears on the display, the update has finished.
Turn XS-84H power OFF.
Step 5
Connect your USB flash drive to the XS-84H's USB WLAN ADAPTOR port on the bottom left corner of the front panel.
Press and continue to hold the [OUT 2 CH 5] + [OUT 2 CH 7] + [OUT 2 CH OFF] buttons, and turn on the power.
Continue to press and hold these buttons until the SWITCHING MODE button flashes.
Step 6
If your NPU version is already up to date, you will get the message "No Need to Update". You can power off your XS-84H and turn it back on normally.
Otherwise, press [ENTER] on the VALUE knob to begin the update.
When the message "Please Restart XS-84H" appears on the display, the update has finished.
Turn XS-84H power OFF, wait a few seconds, and power back on.
Note: The first boot cycle after updating may take longer than normal, and the LCD display may temporarily turn off, please allow extra time for this boot.
Note: If the NPU update fails, please try again with a different USB drive, and this time copy only the NPU file to it.
Step 7
Go to [MENU] > [SYSTEM], and scroll to the end to check the version number and verify the update was successful.
If you had any settings issues prior to the update, consider running a FACTORY RESET from that same page of the menu, it's right above the version number, this will reset all your settings to their defaults.
