VR-50HD MK II: How to Set Up an Audio Mix Minus

More details for each step are in the Reference Manual, page numbers are referenced below.

A mix-minus allows you to create an alternate audio mix where one or more sources are removed from the main mix.

This is done by setting a video output's audio bus assignment to AUX and then muting the AUX Send for any audio channel you want to remove from the AUX audio mix.

Note that the VR-50HD MK II has a couple improvements in this area over other VR series AV mixers, more on this later:

  • There are 2 separate AUX audio buses to utilize
  • Your AUX Sends can be "pre" or "post" fader

In this example, we set up the USB Streaming Output for a mix-minus.

First, go to Menu > USB Streaming and set the Audio Bus to AUX 1.

(Reference Manual, page 34)

Next, press the Setup button above the Main fader and set the AUX 1 Level to 0.0 dB.

Note: The VR-50HD MK II has a second AUX audio bus you can use, if needed.

(Reference Manual, page 31)

Note: If you hold the Enter button while turning the Value knob, it'll change the setting faster.

You should also determine on this screen which audio mix is assigned each video output, if needed.

Finally, press the Setup button above each audio input fader and set the AUX 1 Send level to -INF if you want to remove it from the AUX audio mix or 0.0dB if you want it to add it to the AUX audio mix.

(Reference Manual, page 31)

The AUX Send value can be either pre or post fader, which means:

  • Pre Fader: The faders you use to adjust the Main audio mix have no effect on the AUX audio mixes, only the AUX Sends.
    • Note: The Gain setting for mic inputs will still change the level of a source in the AUX audio mixes, because the gain is applied before the fader level.
  • Post Fader: The faders you use to adjust the Main audio mix will also affect the AUX audio mixes.

So, if you turn Mic 1 all the way down and mute it, it will be muted in the AUX Mix as well when the send is post fader, and unaffected when the send is pre fader.

Note: The AUX Send value with post send either lowers, passes-through, or raises the level it receives from the audio channel's fader. In most cases, you will set the AUX Send value to either -INF or 0.0dB post fader.
