VR-1HD: How to Recall Settings Using the RCS Software

The VR-1HD does not have a built-in Memory Preset Recall function, but you can import and export settings files using the free RCS software.

This guide contains an example application, where we will change the Scaling settings of the Key layer. There are numerous other ways these Settings Files can be used, but this guide will give you a general overview of how to create and load settings files.

  • When loading presets, it's recommended to have the same Video Input selected for each settings file, and to not have any Key effects turned on.

Note that the Key layer can only be resized with firmware version 1.20 or later:

If you are wondering why you would want to do this, imagine you have a camera pointed at a green screen on Video Input 1, and a presentation laptop on Video Input 3.

Maybe the presentation file has a video or animated background playing, and you want your host to be keyed over it .

Then, when you get to a presentation slide with text, maybe you want a smaller green screen camera overlay in the corner of the presentation underneath it. The Key's Scaler allows you to do this.

But you can only have one set of Key settings at a time, so this is where we can get creative.

You will need the free RCS software, which you can download here:

The most important thing to remember is to turn your Key effect off before loading new settings in, otherwise you will see a momentary glitch when it resizes the Key layer.

Also, you want the rest of your video and audio settings dialed in beforehand, because if you change a setting for one settings file, you will have to update the other. The idea is you are creating two settings files, that are identical in every way except for the Key settings.

So, first set everything up the way you would normally have it, and in the Key settings, set your SOURCE CH to HDMI 1, and KEY COLOR to the Green setting that looks best after adjusting the LEVEL and GAIN knobs, as well as your green screen lighting, until you have a nice, clean key.

Once everything is configured, make sure the Key effect is turned off, and Video Input 3 is selected.

Connect to the VR-1HD with the RCS software, and when prompted, choose the VR-1HD's settings, as you want the software to sync with the hardware's settings.

Along the top, select File > Save As, and give the file a name, like "VR-1HD Settings 1".

Next, change your Key settings in the RCS KEY menu, or by going to Menu > KEY on the VR-1HD hardware. You can also hold MENU and press the KEY button, it's a menu shortcut.

Then, turn on the Key effect so you can see the changes you make, and change ZOOM, POSITION H, and POSITION V settings until you have the Key layer configured.

Next, make sure the Key is turned off again, and Video Input 3 is still selected, and in the RCS, go back to File > Save As

It will ask if you want to save the existing changes, click No, because you do not want to overwrite the first file. Give the new settings a different name from the first file, like "VR-1HD Settings 2".

Whenever you recall either of these files, just make sure that the Key effect is turned off, and Video Input 3 is selected. This will give you a clean transition between the different settings.

To load the settings preset, in the RCS software go to File > Open, and again make sure you don't save your changes.
