Roland Switchers: How to Set Up Clean HDMI Output on your Camera

Out of the box, some Camcorders and DSLR cameras may not output a compatible signal with your Roland switcher. This can easily be corrected with your camera settings, but note that not all DSLR cameras are capable of a clean HDMI output at a compatible resolution, especially older models.

This is a camera issue and not a Roland switcher issue. If you connect a DSLR to your switcher and see the camera's settings overlay, unplug it from the Roland switcher and connect directly to a TV, and you will see the same settings overlay.

Most Roland switchers have an input status menu, this allows you to see what the incoming resolution and frame rate is from the camera. This is useful for troubleshooting, as it will take a lot of the guesswork out. More information is available in the manual for your product.

  • Note that the original V-1HD does not have this feature in the menu, but the input buttons will flash white if there is a compatibility issue.

There are so many camera models out there, but this guide will try to help you navigate camera setup. It will start with some general guidelines, followed by a list of cameras and their recommended settings.

  • Listed cameras may not be tested by Roland; listings based on customer inquiries and feedback.
  • This list does not guarantee camera compatibility with all Roland switcher models.
  • Listed camera settings and camera documentation subject to change.

If you have success with a particular model and want to share that information, please e-mail support via Roland Backstage and we will review it.

How to Setup Clean HDMI Output

First, connect your camera's HDMI output to an input on your Roland switcher. If the resolution is compatible, it should display an image.

There are two types of inputs on Roland switchers, Standard and Scaling:

  • Standard inputs will cross-convert, but will not up or down convert the resolution.
    • This allows 1080i input and 1080p output, but not 720p input and 1080p output.

  • Scaling inputs will take multiple compatible resolutions and convert to the output resolution.
    • For an example, check out the V-8HD's Specifications Page, and under "Supported Video Input Formats", note how many more resolutions inputs 7 and 8 support.

Depending on your workflow and other equipment in your video system, you likely have the Roland switcher outputting a 1080P resolution at either 50 Hz or 59.94 Hz, depending on your country's standard.

  • The U.S. uses 59.94.
