V-4EX: How to Setup Chroma and Luma Key Effects
The V-4EX has a number of video effects built in. This guide focuses on the Chroma Key and Luma Key effects.
A Chroma Key removes a solid color from your foreground video image. This is used with a presenter in front of a green screen, or to superimpose graphics like lower thirds and logos.
A Luma Key is similar, but it only removes black or white from your foreground video image. This is used to superimpose graphics like lower thirds and logos.
When you setup a Chroma or Luma Key, you will designate another video source to display underneath the video you removed the Chroma color, or Luma black or white video from.
Foreground Video - Speaker in front of green screen, or Graphic Overlay
Background Video - Video or Still Image displayed behind the Speaker or Graphic
Note that if the color of your Key appears elsewhere in your foreground video, you will partially or completely remove that part of the video as well, so you may need to choose a different color, or adjust the menu settings to get an acceptable Key removal.
If using a green screen, note that V-4EX inputs 1-3 are 480p resolution, so the quality may not be the same as an HD Chroma Key. Additionally, a green screen often needs multiple lights. For guides on how to setup a green screen wall and lighting, search video sharing websites for tutorials to get familiar with the workflow.
The Chroma and Luma Key effects are assigned to the B-Bus effects, located on the right side of the switcher's hardware panel.
Before proceeding, note there are multiple Memory presets, loaded by turning the Memory knob. If you change this value, you can store customized groups of settings and effects.
With factory default settings, there are different effects loaded for the Memory presets, they do not always match what's printed on V-4EX hardware.
Press the Effects button, and a list of effects assigned to the B-Bus will appear on the right side of the LCD screen.
Looking at the list on the right side, these match the Effects buttons on the right side labeled 1 through 4.
To change them, tap the effect on the LCD you want to adjust, and use the Value knob to change it.

First, choose the background picture. Use the A-Bus input selectors to select the channel of the background.
Next, select the video to display in the foreground. Use the B-Bus input selectors to select the channel of the video to be displayed in foreground.
Perform compositing. Press the B-Bus [CHROMA-KEY] Effect button to make it light up.

Adjust the level of the foreground video. You can adjust the display level of the foreground video by moving the video fader (T-Bar) forward or backward.
Moving it all the way to the B-Bus end displays the foreground video at a level of 100%. Moving it all the way to the A-Bus end makes the foreground video disappear.
If the Key effect is not removing the color from the foreground video properly, you may need to make some adjustments to the Key Menu settings.
Press [MENU], followed by selecting [KEY], and pushing [ENTER] on the [VALUE] knob.
In the Key menu, you should first adjust the Chroma Key Color. If you are using a green screen or removing a green background from a lower third or logo, try CYAN-GREN or GREN-CYAN.
Next, further adjust the amount of keying. Turn the B-Bus Effect Control dial to adjust the amount of keying.
If you see a fuzzy green outline around the green screen subject or graphics, you need to make additional fine-tuning adjustments by adjusting the Chroma Key Edge setting.
The Silhouette Level setting applies only to the Silhouette effect.
The process for setting up Luma Key is similar, but there are less menu settings to deal with because it only removes black or white video.
Choose the background picture. Use the A-Bus input selectors to select the channel of the background.
Select the video to display in the foreground. Use the B-Bus input selectors to select the channel to be displayed in the foreground.
Press the B-Bus [LUMINANCE-KEY] Effect button to make it light up.
