PR-50 - How can I import video files into the PR-50 via CD?

You can import the following types of files into the DV-7x or PR-xx units: Video: DV (stream): .dv* Audio: WAV: .wav Still Image: (up to 5MB): JPG, BMP (uncompressed), TGA (alpha channel) * While it is possible to import certain uncompressed AVI video files, it is NOT recommended for reliable operation.

VIDEO Prior to importing a video file, your video file should be in the full-frame DV (.dv) format. After formatting, its best to re-name your file to filename.xdv, which is the filename association used by Roland products. Your .dv or .xdv file should have audio formatted at 48KHz and be locked to video (to avoid drift). If your video source is not in .dv format, we recommend using the Pro version of Apple Quicktime (Windows or Mac) to convert your files. Here we will convert an MPEG-2 file to a DV files using Quicktime Pro v7.1.3. First, open your MPEG (or AVI, MOV, MP4, etc) in Quicktime. Next, select File > Export. In the Export window, set the Export setting to Movie to DV Stream. Click Options. DV Format = DV Video Format = NTSC Scan Mode = Interlaced Aspect Ratio = 4:3 Preserve Aspect Ratio = (check) / Letterbox Audio Format = Locked @ 48KHz Click OK. Select your preferred folder for saving the exported .dv file and click Save. The file will be converted to filename.dv and saved in that folder.Go to that folder and rename the file to filename.xdv. You are now ready to import your .xdv file into your Roland device. Go to the Importing Files: Best Practices section below for details on importing your video clips.

AUDIO Audio files must be in 48KHz WAV format (.wav) prior to importing. Since your Roland device will dither all WAV files to a sample rate of 48KHz, its a good idea to make sure your .wav file is formatted for 48KHz. This will result in the highest possible sound quality. WAV files with sample rates other than 48KHz may not be importable. If your audio is on a commercial CD, you can simply place your CD in the CDROM of your Roland Editor device and click the Audio CD button in the Editing screen. Use the Audio CD interface to select tracks and import them into your project. The Roland will automatically resample and save your CD song in the Audio material palette. If your audio files are MP3, Ogg Vorbis, AIFF or other audio formats, you will need to convert them to WAV format prior to importing. This can be done in any number of software DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) programs. Some freeware programs such as Audacity and Kristal Audio Engine also have the capacity to open various audio file types and export them as 48KHz WAV.

STILL IMAGES Still images from your digital camera should be uploaded into your computer and edited prior to importing them into your Roland editor. By doing some basic editing prior to importing, you can weed out unwanted images and crop, re-size and correct your desired images. Your JPG images should be 5MB in size or less. Resize them as necessary. If your intention is to pan/zoom your JPG, keep them of a size and resolution that allows a pan/zoom free of pixellation. Experiment for best results. You can also import uncompressed bitmap (.bmp) files up to 5 MB in size. If you want your image to have transparency, you can create an alpha channel image in your photo editing software and export it as a Targa (.tga) file. Again, this file must be 5MB or smaller. Targa files are handy for use in the Titler or Insert (video) track in order to superimpose your graphic over video.

IMPORTING FILES: BEST PRACTICES There are three primary methods to get your media files into the Roland device: 1: CDROM The default method is burning a CDROM. As long as you can fit your files into the 700MB limit of a CDROM, you can use the CD burner on your computer. Assemble your files into a new folder in your CD burning program and burn them at a slow speed.
