VR-6HD: Create Another AUX Output Using Sub Program
This guide helps you create 3 independent outputs on your VR-6HD, by converting a picture in picture layer to another AUX output. It is still a picture in picture layer, but it will function as an AUX.
What Each Output Does
The VR-6HD has 4 video output types, plus 2 multi-views:
- Program - The currently selected input source, plus up to 2 picture in picture and 1 downstream key overlays for compositions. Supports cut, mix, and wipe transitions.
- Sub Program - A copy of Program, but you can independently select which overlays are visible, basically making it a remix of program. Supports cut, mix, and wipe transitions.
- Preview - Used to set up a source or composition before sending it to Program. Only supports cut transitions.
- AUX - An independent output used to display a different input source, but you can independently select which overlays are visible. Only supports cut transitions.
If you need an additional AUX bus, make a PinP layer full screen and output it on the Sub Program video bus.
- You can also disable the DSK 1 on Sub Program if you want a clean output.
- The layer order is fixed, but you can swap settings between the same layer type. For example, PinP&Key 1's settings with PinP&Key 2.
- Menu > PinP/DSK > PinP&KEY X > COPY/SWAP
In this guide, you will disable PinP & Key 2 on Program and disable PinP & Key 1 on Sub Program. Once you make PinP & Key 2 fullscreen and enable it, you can select it's source using the hardware panel, giving you another switchable AUX bus.
PinP & Key 2 needs to be enabled on Program at all times for this to work, otherwise you will see the selected source on both Program and Sub Program.
Menu Settings
Decide which outputs you want to assign the AUX and Sub Program buses to. You can use the 3 HDMI outputs, the USB streaming output, and the direct streaming output.
You can assign the same bus to more than one output. If you use all 3 HDMI outputs, you have to use the Multi-view on the LCD monitor or USB output.
- Menu > Video > Output Assign > VIDEO OUT X > Program
- Menu > Video > Output Assign > VIDEO OUT Y > Sub Program
- Menu > Video > Output Assign > VIDEO OUT Z > AUX
Next, change the visible PinP and DSK layers for both Program and Sub Program.
- Menu > Video > Layer Settings > Program > PinP & Key 2 > Disable
- Menu > Video > Layer Settings > Sub Program > PinP & Key 1 > Disable
- Menu > Video > Layer Settings > Sub Program > PinP & Key 2 > Enable
If you do not want your DSK layers to appear on Sub Program, disable them.
- Menu > Video > Layer Settings > Sub Program > DSK > Disable
Next, resize PinP & Key 2 to 100%, remove the window border, and press the PGM button to enable it.
- Menu > PinP/DSK > PinP&KEY 2 > Type > PinP
- Menu > PinP/DSK > PinP&KEY 2 > Window - Position H > 0.0%
- Menu > PinP/DSK > PinP&KEY 2 > Window - Position V > 0.0%
- Menu > PinP/DSK > PinP&KEY 2 > Window - Size > 100%
- Menu > PinP/DSK > PinP&KEY 2 > Window - Cropping H > 100.0%
- Menu > PinP/DSK > PinP&KEY 2 > Window - Cropping V > 100.0%
- Menu > PinP/DSK > PinP&KEY 2 > Window - Border Width > 0
PinP & Key 2 is now visible only on your Sub Program outputs, you will not see it on Program.
You can change the PinP & Key 2 source by opening the PinP&Key 2 menu, and choosing your source using the input buttons.
To return to the previous mode (Input Select, AUX, Scene Memory, Macro), exit the menu.
Additional Tips
Prevent Scenes From Changing Settings
Picture in Picture settings are affected by Scene Memory recalls. If you plan to create scenes, protect these settings from recalls by turning off these menus in the Load Parameter submenu.
- Menu > MEMORY/MACRO/SEQ > Scene Memory > Setup > Load Parameter - Video Assign > Off
- Menu > MEMORY/MACRO/SEQ > Scene Memory > Setup > Load Parameter - PinP&Key 2 > Off
Prevent Accidentally Turning Off PinP & Key 2
You can lock the PinP & Key 4 PGM button to prevent accidentally turning it off, but do not lock the Setup button:
- Menu > System > Panel Lock > PinP & Key 2 - PGM Button > On
Using Demo Macros
The VR-6HD has pre-built macros to help you learn this powerful feature. Using these macros is not recommended for the workflow in this guide, as some macros will modify PinP & Key 2.
You can edit or delete these macros as needed in the Macro menu.
