Roland Switchers: How to Stream to Facebook with the "Use Web App" Setting
Use this guide to stream to Facebook Live using Roland AV mixers with Direct Streaming output, which is not the same as USB Streaming output. You can link your account using a web browser with the Roland Web App.
The following models have Direct Streaming:
- SR-20HD
- VR-6HD
- VR-120HD
AeroCaster has direct streaming, but does not use the web app.
Streaming to Pages & Scheduling
Due to recent changes with Facebook's API:
- The Roland Web App cannot schedule streams (aka events)
Until this is fixed, the current solution is to set up a Custom stream on your Roland AV mixer and paste the stream information from Facebook to the Roland Web App.
To create a scheduled event on Facebook's website:
-
Timeline Stream
- Switch to your account (not a Page)
- Create a Live Video post
- Click on "Create live video event"
-
Group Stream
- Switch to an account that is part of the Group
- Go to the Group's page
- Add a new post, click on the ". . ." and click on Live Video
- Click on "Create live video event"
-
Page Stream
- Switch to your Page's account
- Create a Live Video post
- Click on "Create live video event"
Roland Hardware Setup
Connect your Roland AV mixer with a network cable to a Wi-Fi router with internet. Most routers will automatically assign an IP address using DHCP, so it's recommended to keep the default setting:
- SR-20HD: Menu > Network > LAN Setup > Configure > Using DHCP
- VR-6HD: Menu > Network > Configure > Using DHCP
- VR-120HD: Menu > Network > LAN Setup > Configure > Using DHCP
In the Stream menu, set one of the services to Facebook Live and you will see a setting called Use Web App or Use Web Application.
- SR-20HD: Menu > Stream > Service 1/2 > Facebook Live - Use Web App
- VR-120HD: Menu > Stream/Record > Service 1/2 Setup > Facebook Live
- Go back one page and select Use Web Application
You will get a short URL and QR code. Use either to access the Roland Web App page.
Example from SR-20HD
Roland Web App Setup
Use a computer for the initial setup. After that, you can easily use a mobile device to set up the stream.
When you first open the Web App, you will see this message.
A window will pop up to log in to Facebook.
- If you are already logged in to Facebook on that web browser, it will skip to asking for permission to link the Web App to Facebook.
- If you are already logged in and linked, the window will quickly open and close, and the Web App will take you to the stream setup page.
If you are currently logged in as a Page instead of your main account, click Continue to switch. If you also have the Facebook website open, refresh that page in your browser.
When using the Web App for the first time, it will ask for permission to link it to your Facebook account. Click Continue.
Click Friends to change your privacy settings. This button may also say Public or Only Me.
If you ever plan to stream Public, choose that setting, it enables all three privacy levels for timeline streams.
When finished, click Continue.
For example, if you select Public, you can still create private streams, but if you select Only Me, due to the way Facebook works, you can only create private streams.
If you try to stream public, you will see on Facebook that your stream is private until you change this setting on the Facebook website.
When finished, click Done.
Click Choose What You Allow if you manage Groups and Pages with your Facebook account.
Here, you can uncheck any Pages you do not want to stream to. When finished, click the gray left arrow in the top left corner, and click Continue.
Stream Settings
Once that is complete, the pop-up window will close and you will see this screen.
Scheduled streams are not supported at this time. Instead use the Facebook website to schedule one and set up the Roland hardware as a Custom service instead of Facebook Live to send the RTMP URL and Stream Key from the Web App to the Roland hardware.
- Title and Description: This information is displayed on Facebook to help people find your stream.
-
Select Destination for Live-Streaming: Choose where your stream is posted.
- Timeline: The timeline of the account you logged in with.
- Group: The timeline of a Group linked to your account.
- Page: The timeline of a Page linked to your account.
-
Select Privacy Scope: This sets your stream as Everyone (public), All Friends, or Self (private).
- If you set your permissions earlier to Friends or Only Me, you will not be able to stream Public, even if you select it here, until you change the setting on the Facebook website.
- Group and Page will follow the rules you set on the Facebook website.
If you click on Group or Page, you will see the all the Groups and Pages that you manage through your Facebook account. You can select one using the drop-down menu.
In this example, my Facebook account has a Page I can stream to, but my account does not manage any Groups.
