About S-0808 Power
Choose the type of power suited to your application from the three options: External battery, REAC Embedded Power, and AC adapter. The external battery mounts supported include IDX and Anton Bauer.
External Battery | AC Adapter | Ethernet Cable |
External batteries made by IDX and Anton Bauer are supported. The respective mount and battery can be attached to the side of the device using the included plate adapter. This enables the S-0808 to be used in a location where AC power is not available. | Power can be supplied by connecting a general purpose AC adapter to the DC IN terminal on the S-0808 (12-18V, 3A). | Both the audio stream and power are transmitted through one REAC (CAT5e) cable. Power is supplied to the S-0808 from up to 100 meters away by devices that support REAC Embedded Power (e.g., S-4000M, S-4000D). Some PoE devices (25W or higher) can also provide the necessary power. |
IDX Battery Options
Link two E-10 batteries from IDX for up to 9 hours of continuous use
* Assuming fully charged batteries and all phantom power engaged (5mA x 8ch).
* Ambient temperature, battery charge status, and battery aging may affect actual operating time.
Items that require a separate purchase:
* The EC-1 portable charger is a simplified model and will only charge up to 90%. Use VL-2S or other chargers for up to 100% charging capability.
* Supports P-VS2

Operating time may be affected by ambient temperature, battery charge status, and battery aging. The operating time above is based on the use of phantom power (5mA x 8ch). Battery operating time is calculated by: Battery capacity (Wh) ÷ power consumed by S-0808 * Calculations are estimates only.Power consumed by S-0808 = 22W when using phantom power (5mA x 8ch). 25W when using phantom power (10mA x 8ch). Power Link can mount 2 batteries to double the capacity. Power Link requires the same type batteries and the same charge rating. |
Link two NP batteries from IDX for up to 6 hours of continuous use
* Assuming fully charged batteries and all phantom power engaged (5mA x 8ch).
* Ambient temperature, battery charge status, and battery aging may affect actual operating time.

1. Attach the battery mount to the included adapted plate Eight screws for the battery mount are included. They differ in length and diameter from the four screws used to attach to the bottom panel. Both sets are dedicated screws. Be careful not to mix them up. | 3. Connecting the power cable Connect the power cable to the battery mount and to the DC In port on the S-0808. |
2. Attach the plate and battery mount assembled in step 1 Use the four included screws to attach the battery mount and plate assembled in step 1 to the side panel of the S-0808. * Be careful not to over-tighten the screws to avoid damaging the S-0808. | 4. Begin supplying power from the external battery Install an external battery on the battery mount. The S-0808 powers up and the POWER indicator lights. |
Roland does not manufacture an original AC adapter for the S-0808. Use any AC adapter that supports the S-0808 4-pin XLR style DC IN terminal.
REAC Embedded Power
Roland’s original technology that transmits both audio and power via a REAC (Cat5e/6) cable. In the diagram below, by connecting the S-4000M, power is supplied to the S-0808 on the recording area side.
Genuine Roland products equipped with durable ethernet (Ethercon) connectors.
Below are Roland devices that supply power to the S-0808.

The Standard which Supplies Power via an Ethernet Cable
What is PoE?
・ Acronym for “Power over Ethernet”
・ Supplies power to other Ethernet devices via an Ethernet cable
・ Standards include IEEE802.3af, as well as the IEEE802.3at (PoE+), which is expandable and supplies a larger capacity of power.
By connecting a switch with PoE+ in line with the CAT5e/6 cable, power is supplied to both the S-0808 units.
PoE Details
Standard that Supplies Power via Ethernet Cable
What is PoE and PoE+?
- Acronym for “Power over Ethernet”
- Supplies power to other Ethernet devices via an Ethernet cable
- Standard IEEE802.3af; supplies power to PoE supported devices up to 15.4W (such as Roland M-48 Personal Mixer)
- Standard IEEE802.3at (PoE+); supplies power to PoE supported devices up to 30W (such as Roland S-0808 Digital Snake)
CAT5e/6 copper wire configuration
- One cable contains eight copper wires which are arranged in four pairs.
- One pair is used for sending, another pair for receiving data.
PoE configurations
- Uses two pairs of copper wires to supply power.
- One pair carries both the positive and negative charge.
- There are two patterns: pattern A uses two pairs of copper wires for both data communication and power supply, and pattern B uses two pairs for data communication and two pairs for power supply.
- The devices that do not support PoE are not automatically detected, therefore power is not supplied.
* REAC Embedded Power has the same basic PoE configuration, but does not support the pattern A model.
Devices that can provide power to the S-0808 as a general PoE+ Injector or PoE+ switch are available from suppliers such as TrendNet, Level One, PowerDsine among others. Make sure they directly supply 30W or if they also supply 15W that they have a toggle that can switch to 30W.
